This program has been instrumental in ensuring that any child in Kitchener that wants to play the game of hockey, but does not have the financial support at home to do so, can still play. Furthermore, we do not discriminate as to what level of hockey a subsidized player can participate in. Donna always believed a child should play in a level of hockey based on their athletic ability, and not their financial ability.
Every applicant to The Donna Weber Sponsored Children’s Program must go through a detailed application process including but not limited to, submission of the previous year’s financial statements, to determine if there is a need for support and if so, to what degree.
This approval process is now being done by a small and confidential committee of 3 to 4 volunteers who’s first priority is maintaining the child’s (and applicants) dignity as well as supporting them financially for the upcoming season.
Last year for the 2009 / 2010 season, Donna Weber had 120 children playing hockey through her program. Sadly, this past March, Donna passed away, leaving KMHA with the loss of a tremendous friend and volunteer. We all feel an obligation to continue this legacy program in her honour but cannot do so without your support.
In order to provide for 100+ hockey players with registration fees, equipment and seasonal costs, we expect we will need to raise between $75,000 and $100,000 per season.
