Byron Optimist Competitive Tournament Champions
What a great weekend of hockey!
January 27-29 2017

This past weekend the Minor Atom Jr. Rangers A team played in the Byron Optimist Competitive Tournament.
We played 4 games in the round robin segment and ended up with 3 wins and a tie. The first two games the boys came out flying and their passing was on point.  It was some of the best hockey that the coaching staff have witnessed the boys play. They were really working together beautifully. We played well the next two games, but you could tell that by the fourth game, they were getting a little tired. The tie to London kept us in first place with 7 of a possible 8 points and only 6 goals scored against us and 28 goals for us.

The boys were well rested for the semi-finals and put up another good win against the East Enders. In the finals, we faced Woodstock and it was a well matched game.  It was back and forth for a while until Woodstock managed to put in a goal.  The boys did not give up. They kept pressing and we could have turned the tide quickly if it was not for the outstanding efforts of the Woodstock goalie.  With persistence comes rewards and there was a big scramble in front of the Woodstock net and the puck was batted out of the air and in to their net for the tie. The game remained a tie through to the completion of regulation time.

In overtime, our boys were pressing with no success.  Woodstock carried the puck into our end and our defence put a stop to their efforts and actually drew a penalty against Woodstock.  The power play was unsuccessful, but I think it took some wind out of the sails of the Woodstock team.  With 1:40 seconds remaining in overtime the boys were pressing and a nice shot potted the winner!  The Minor Atom Jr. Rangers A team put together another overtime winner to win their second tournament of the year!  Way to go boys!  A job well done!

Thanks to all the players and the families for a great weekend of hockey and companionship!
