Wow! The Red team once again wins in the dying seconds of the game, playing short-handed and with the opposition playing aggressive 6 on 4 desperation hockey. The Red team was up 3 -1 at one point, only to watch our lead vanish and having to rely on our goalie & defense stop a major assault by the Grey team.
Venning earns the Player of the Game for keeping us in the game and avoiding 2 losses in a row.
Game Recap:
Grey goal #1 - Grey scores an early 1 – 0 Grey lead; they clear it out of their end, and Grey #16 waits for the puck in the neutral zone; he scores a breakaway deked glove side goal.
Red goal #1 - Bentley scores with 8:23 left in second. Pearson steals a puck in our end, moves it up to centre ice; McMillan scoops it up. While he skates towards the net, Bentley smartly skates towards the net. McMillan fires a cannon, but the Grey goalie saves it and Bentley pops in the rebound.
Red goal #2 - Schleimer scores with 4:41 remaining in the second. After several shots by Grey, Martin intercepts a rebound and makes a great pass to an awaiting Schleimer, who has a breakaway goal.
Red goal #3 – Todd scores with 3:05 remaining in the second period. Wright intercepts a puck when Grey tries to skate behind our net. He moves down the line and passes it to Todd in neutral zone. Todd dekes the Grey goalie to one side and sneaks the puck into the wide open side of the net.
Grey goal #2 – 2:40 remaining in second. We fumble the puck in front of the Grey net. Grey #10 grabs it and scores a quick unassisted goal.
Grey get a tripping penalty 9:27 of third.
Grey goal #3 - Grey scores short-handed at 7:29 remaining in the third. Red can’t clear the puck; Grey is playing an aggressive penalty kill. We leave our net unprotected, and they pass to an awaiting player who backhands it in.
Todd gets a penalty at 1:52 remaining, while trying to stop Grey #16 from rushing our net (still 3 – 3)
Winning Red goal #4 - Schleimer wins the following faceoff and scores (unassisted)
Grey pulls their goalie for the extra attacker but Venning and our mighty Defense hold them off to win the game.
What a great game! Our hearts were racing long after the game ended.
