Support Continues for Kitchener Girls
Three time Olympic Gold Medalist Haley Wickenheiser has added her name to the growing list of Supporters for Kitchener Girls Hockey Day. The following is a letter received by the committee for Girls Hockey Day.

January 22, 2012

Dear Girls of Kitchener Minor Hockey;

Hello to the next generation of young women playing this – the greatest sport on earth!

Someone told me a little bit about the first ever Kitchener Girls Hockey Day and your incredible dedication and heart. I wanted to share how much I admire those qualities in this next generation of young female hockey players.

I wish you well on your journey today and hope it’s the first of many days celebrating girls and women in hockey. Following your dreams and doing something you’re passionate about is a journey - sometimes it’s smooth sailing and sometimes there are detours or obstacles along the way, but as you know and I know, it’s often the camaraderie and spirit of the girls we are playing with that keep us inspired the most.

While you may not all aspire to stand atop that podium, the skills you are learning through hockey such as determination, never giving up, group dynamics, etc., are all skills that will translate into excellent and employable skills down the road. Perhaps you will apply those skills as a doctor, a lawyer, a bank CEO, a retail manager, a mother, an executive director, and a philanthropist or perhaps there is an Olympian or two among you.

Whatever you do, I encourage you to approach it as though a gold medal is at stake – always striving to give it you’re very best! Have fun out there and good luck girls of Kitchener Minor Hockey.

Sincerely,

Hayley Wickenheiser
