Mouthguard use in relation to concussions in sport and dental health
Hi Blackhawks Parents,

The following is an article submitted by Dr. Jason Price regarding recent research on mouthguard use in relation to concussions in sport and dental health.

Much recent sporting discussion has revolved around concussion occurrence in sports. Popular opinion suggests that protective equipment such as mouthguards can prevent concussions. Research on this is inconclusive at best for this practice.

Regardless of these findings I still advise my patients wear mouthguards because there is relatively mild drawbacks from this practice such as difficultly communicating while playing. Even if there is no reduction in concussion occurrence there is the advantage of protecting the teeth and preventing a hefty dental bill.
