Sky Soar in Bradford
Despite the disappointing results, Atomic Sky were soaring at the Bradford Blue and Gold tournament this weekend. The 1-2 record did not do the team justice as they battled right to the end and still had a chance to move on to the playoff round until the final seconds of the final period in this highly contested event.

The tourney opener saw Sky matched up against a speedy Cambridge Hornet Minor Atom Select team that was determined to make life miserable for their larger cross-town rivals. Up 2-0, Cambridge started to take advantage of Sky's penalty woes and made it close, finally losing 2-1 at the end. Owen B. was on fire setting up the first goal and getting the second unassisted to lead the charge. Kostas G. and Alex J. were chosen co-MVPs to get the ball rolling for Sky. With one victory under their belts Sky was ready for any and all comers.

Later Friday afternoon, the boys lost a squeaker to a spirited team from Barrie, the Barrie Blue Ninjas. True to their name, the Ninjas struck for a single marker and managed to hang on for the victory. Co-MVPs for this game were Liam M. for his tenacious fore-checking and puck movement and Sami B. for his stellar defensive plays. Clearly behind the eight-ball now, Sky needed to pull a rabbit out of their collective hats if they were going to continue in the tourney.

The final tilt of the weekend came Saturday afternoon against the host Bradford Bulldogs and saw two desperate teams square off, with the winner having a mathematical chance to win Pool B and move on while the loser would be eliminated. Bradford jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first with the startled Sky struggling to get their legs under them after a long first day. Eventually, Sky tied it up in the third on a penalty shot taken by Jake P. With only a few minutes to go in the third the game remained at 3-3. Unfortunately, the Bulldogs popped a fourth marker to seal the deal and send Sky home. Co-MVP went to  Eddy C. and Ryan B. for their powerful contributions to the team this game. Tournament MVP and a spiffy pair of hockey-lace flips flops went to Jake P. who not only scored the opener in this crucial game but also potted the tying goal on the penalty shot.

Congratulations to all the Sky players for their heroic efforts this weekend. With a goal difference of 5-6, Sky came close to moving on but in the end were denied their quest. Keep it up, boys! You were awesome this weekend.

Needless to say, a good time was had by all.
