John MacDonald Memorial CHAMPS

The Hockey. The boys had 5 games all with similar results, Big Friday wins against London Nationals and the Lincoln Blades 3-0, 3-0 had the boys receiving max points of 6 and had Coach Darren chanting “donuts” followed by a team of kids echoing his sentiments. Saturday the boys had a late afternoon game. The rest must have helped them. 9 goals were scored and terrific puck movement had the Rangers control the play all game and skate to an easy victory and granting them the #1 seed for the next rd. Semi final play had them up against there toughest competition again in North London. A see saw game had the Rangers in and out of control giving up two leads but never giving up on them selves or there teammates, regulation solved nothing and a 4 on 4 overtime also had them all square. A shoot out followed and the Rangers had some sick deeks and timely saves to solidify there place in the finals. The Sterling Blues awaited a Rangers team that got more confident as the tournament proceeded. Looking like a well oiled machine by this time with well organized break outs, hard back checking and a persistent fore check that kept the Rangers in full control for the games entirety. As the seconds were counted down by the players on the bench 5 sec to 0... the doors opened and a yard sale of rather expensive equipment was thrown across the ice and cheers and laughter ensued. Although by the time the medals were handed out, I think the 5:30-6am wake up time had caught up to them. All in All a great way to open up the Rangers MD Red tournament season 5-0, 4 shut outs and the semi final shoot out victory. The coaches are very proud of these players and the big steps that were taken in learning the systems and positional play we preach. Still lots to learn but what a difference it makes when they do the things required to win hockey games.
