Lady Rangers split back to back games this weekend

In what seems like forever, the Lady Rangers finally got to hit the ice together in game action this past weekend. Saturdays game was at Hespeler against Cambridge and Sunday we were back home playing London. Even though we took our first loss of the season, there were still plenty of positives to take away from the games and some areas we need to work on as well.

Saturdays game had both teams off to a fast start. There were numerous chances at both ends of the ice. It had been some time since the girls had seen game action together, and it was starting to show in the second part of the game. Our shifts started getting a bit too long, and come the 3rd period, our girls were gassed. The back check wasn't the same as it was in the first half of the game and that led to us playing on our heels the majority of the 3rd period. There were loose pucks that we got beat too and we didn't keep the pressure on for as long as needed.  When the dust settled, we would take our first loss of the season, 3-2. Amber played a great game, making some huge saves for us despite the hacks and players in her crease. A few important things to remember from that game is to make sure that when our goalie covers the puck, were not letting any sticks in the crease trying to jam pucks loose. Also. lets keep our shifts short. Remember, less is more. The less time we take each shift means there will be more shifts for everyone overall and also means we will have more gas at the end of the game.

Our second game of the weekend would be a total opposite game from the day before. We were matched up with a very fast and talented London Devilettes team, and the girls cranked up the energy and tempo from the first faceoff until the final buzzer. The girls skated hard for 45 seconds to a minute for each shift, back checked hard and had a strong fore-check. The defense stepped up big time and made some great plays. They pinched when they needed to, recognized when they needed to get back in a hurry, cleared everything to the boards and moved the puck to the wingers at the right times. The forwards were on their game as well. Great back checking, lots of pucks to the net and some exceptional passing in all three zones, but especially the neutral zone. Tater made some fantastic plays with the puck to hit the open players and set up a few goals in doing so. Kiwi was a machine back checking and getting the puck spread around and Langer was big in net again, coming up huge to keep us in the lead all game. Every single player contributed to a solid team W. It was great to see the girls playing 3 periods of good Lady Ranger hockey.

I wanted to say how excited the team is to having Augusta back with us again after her injury. She was missed during her absence, and it will be good to have the whole team together again. I would like also like to thank Olivia for spending some time with us and getting on the ice for a couple games. We really appreciate you helping out!

Our first tourney is less than a month away. We have a few practices and a couple games before hand, so lets use those to iron out the kinks and work on the areas that we need to work on. Bring the same energy to practice as we do to our games and keep pushing yourself and each other to get better.

One final note-I would like to give a HUGE thanks to the Lady Rangers Midget AA team and coach Jeff for inviting our girls into your dressing room and meeting some of your players. What a dressing room! Our girls were in awe! It was good for the girls to get some motivation and hopefully drive them to keep improving so they can use the same room someday. Thanks again!
