The Six Games of January
Not to be confused with the "Twelve Days of Christmas", the Kitchener Lady Rangers Midget A's began 2019 with the "Six Games of January".

A slow start to the New Year had the ladies going 0 for three during the first of “Six games of January”.  Although a closer game than the score suggested (one empty netter), game 1 had little energy or compete level for the ladies. A day later, although the score again wouldn’t indicate it, the all around effort was much improved. A goal that normally wouldn’t find the mesh, a “D” miscue and an empty netter didn’t reflect the games overall better effort. The energy continued into game 3 with several “D” moving up to the forward end of the bench. A beautiful stretch pass (just like in practice!!) had the ladies taking a one goal lead into the break. Alas several unfortunate let downs in the third gave the ladies their third loss in a row.

Juggling the lines for game 4 seemed to give the ladies a spark in their play. A rare team “address” by manager Ken reminded the ladies that one part of the road to Provincials runs through Waterloo and that they needed to play with “fire in their belly”. With the forwards helping the “D” and the “D” helping out “playing” forward, the ladies earned a well-deserved “W”.

Game 5 saw some moments of brilliance, missed break away opportunities and some terribly tired, sluggish play. Although weekday games are rare, priorities need to be decided should there be any weekday “play off or play down” games. Some great puck handling patience, a shot on net (and maybe a good puck roll) gave the ladies a late goal to take away one point.

Closing out the regular season, game 6 saw much improved play from all fifteen players. Good puck control, good puck movement, winning puck battles and several (just like in practice) beautiful passes for goals, ended the month of January on a winning note.  Note to self – it really isn’t rocket science!!

A special note of “Thanks” to our three “seniors”, Ms. Arnold, Ms. Lackenbauer and Ms. Piitz, who have played their last regular season game of Midget “A” hockey.  It has truly been our pleasure!!
