Bradford Blue and Gold Tournament Recap

Game 1 – Game Captain Noah Raymond led the Rangers Red onto the ice against the Northumberland Nighthawks.

The Rangers dominated the play in the first period with 15 shots on net and had the Nighthawks hemmed in their own zone for much of the period.  Sean Disbrow opened the scoring on a slapper from the faceoff dot assisted by Noah Raymond and Spencer McCormick.  The Rangers had 2 powerplays but could not capitalize on them after overwhelming the Nighthawks for the first two periods.  The forward line of Brock Smith, Rowan Dunlop, and Daniel Deckert were dangerous all game and generated a number of scoring chances but could not put one away.

The defensive pairings of Brody Voll and Tyler Andrews were solid on D shutting down several opportunities by the speedy Nighthawk forwards while the pairing of Eric MacPherson and Ethan Goetz generated some scoring opportunities throughout the first two periods and blocked multiple shots down the stretch.

The 3rd period the ice was tilted against the Rangers and only some spectacular goaltending from Nathan Hancock gave us a chance to hold on for a 1-1 tie.  This earned Nathan the Workhorse of the Game as he turned aside 12 third period shots from the Nighthawks many from A scoring areas.  This was a game that the whole team agreed we worked hard for two periods and were not rewarded but slowed down in the third and hung on.

Game 2 – Game Captain Brody Voll led the Rangers Red on the ice against the Cumberland Dukes.

The Rangers were in for a tough game against mostly a Major team but we held our own through the first two periods battling hard.  The line of Joel Guse, Tyler Kramp, and Sam Clark were dangerous creating a number of chances and using their speed and skill to create space and scoring opportunities.  The Rangers went a bit flat in the 3rd period again where Cumberland scored 2 of their 3 goals to put the Rangers away.  Our defenders did a good job at keeping the Big Cumberland forwards to the outside for shots but we struggled in front of our own net clearing rebounds and loose pucks.

We called on our goalie Max Thompson a few too many times to make a 3rd or 4th save which on two occasions ended up in the back of the Ranger net.  This game was a good test of how we handle a bigger stronger team which was a tough loss but some good takeaways from this game to improve on for next time.

Game 3 – Game Captain Sean Disbrow led the Rangers Red on the ice against the Nepean Raiders.

The Rangers Red were faced with another tough test against a team that was made up mostly of major players but early on in the game the boys were up to the challenge dominating the play in the first period.  With 15+ shots in the first period, 3 powerplays, and a couple of goal mouth scrambles the Rangers Red just could not bury the puck.  The coaching staff threw the forward lines in a blender to try to generate some offence, with the line of Brock Smith, Tyler Kramp, and Noah Raymond looking strong all game creating scoring opportunities.  Sean Disbrow, Daniel Deckert, and Spencer McCormick played a great two way physical game stunting a number of Raider chances with strong backchecks and good transition to offence when forcing turnovers.

A game that saw a lot of penalties in the third period and some very questionable officiating the boys worked hard right to the end.  Although we ended up losing 5-0, 3 of the goals were scored on the powerplay on either a one- or two-man advantage.  The defensive pairing of Bradley Wigmore and Owen Stewart were beasts on the PK and battled hard in the defensive end all game.  Nathan Hancock kept us in the game with some great play but was hung out to dry on multiple 5 on 3’s in the final period of the game.  Bradley Wigmore took the Workhorse of the Game for his stellar defensive play and penalty killing.

Summary:

A tough weekend on the ice in terms of results but a lot of good learnings that will make the boys stronger as the season goes on.  A great teambuilding weekend that saw a bunch of hockey players show up for a tournament, work hard, battle, and come out at the end of the weekend a better hockey team!  Looking forward to our upcoming practice and 3 games in the next 5 days and hopefully get back to our winning ways!

Go Rangers Red Go!
