Lady Rangers Midget BB Win Guelph Tournament
The Midget BB Lady Rangers captured the gold medal at the 13th annual ThunderStorm tournament in Guelph on Sunday, January 8th, with a convincing 2-0 victory over the host Guelph Thunder. Nicole Bingeman and Sarah Zister provided the offense and Hayley Grigg recorded the shutout. Taylor Fergusson, Laura Lesperance, Sheryl Mallon and Sara Martin contributed assists.
Kitchener advanced to the championship game via a hard fought 1-0 victory in the semi-final over the Waterloo Ravens in a morning contest. Hailey Phillips scored the winner late in the third period, with assistance from Jackie Frank and Martin. Goaltender Grigg stole the game by stopping 25 shots, including 14 in the second period when Kitchener was held without a shot on goal.
In round robin play, the Lady Rangers defeated Kincardine Kinucks 4-1, after tying the Burlington Barracudas 1-1 and the Oakville Hornets 2-2. In each of the round robin games, Kitchener held a sizable edge in shots, but ran into some hot goaltending in the two ties. Bingeman scored against Burlington on a pass from Shyanne Langer. Paige Riley and Emily Horst provided the goals against Oakville, while Emily Gillingham, Kelsey Kirby and Hailey Phillips had assists. Against Kincardine, Taylor Windlinger registered the win, on goals scored by Kelsey Kirby, Riley, Courtney Voisin and Zister. Voisin added two assists, while single helpers went to Gillingham, Horst, Kirby, Martin and Phillips.
