A Taste for the Era
Not only do the Spitfires carry the name, but a bit of history and character is brought into the season for us.
The first question asked when the team gathered in the change room for the first time was "What is a Spitfire?",
and the knowledge of what it was was limited. So we gave the team a little background on it, and helped them to understand how this plane was significant in our world's history.
We've added a few themes to our season: We have the team warm up with "propellers" (wrist twists with the sticks) and "swoops" (sticks across the shoulders combined with squats). As game warm-up ends, they finish with the "attack formation/strafing run"; in which they split off to center ice, and return with a rapid fire on the net. You may even see myself (Coach Mike) wearing the fighter pilot helmet and goggles on our bench.
Some British mannerisms are being incorporated as well; when our pilots return from a goal, they are greeted with a "Jolly Good!" from their teammates.
A team cheer is still in the works, but it is expected we will incorporate some characters from eras past.
