Introducing "A" Programming from U10 to U16
Kitchener Minor Hockey and the Jr Ranger Program are proud to introduce "A" level hockey back into our programs this upcoming 2026-27 Season.
Over the last year, KMHA has worked through the process to reintroduce the A level of competition back into our program to better balance our program and develop players through a pathway to the next level.
Since the inception of open borders, the OHF has limited the number of teams being introduced at new levels of competition. In order to make a move or introduce teams Minor Hockey Associations had to apply through their branch (in this case Alliance Hockey) and if successful then move forward to a secondary adjudication with the Ontario Hockey Federation itself. We are proud to say that we have made the request and received notice that we were successful in attaining an A designation for our third tier teams.
What does this mean to our player base?
This reintroduction will mean that KMHA will offer, from U10 to U16
- 1 team at the AAA level
- 1 team at the Alliance Seeded level with a designation of AA
- 1 team at the Alliance Seeded level with a designation of A
- 1 team at the BB level
At all other age categories we will still have the same number and level of teams offered as in previous seasons.
What does being an A team mean?
Being an A team will mean that the team starts designated as an A team for the purposes of tryouts, tournaments and exhibition play.
What League will the A teams Play In?
KMHA A teams will start out in the Seeded loop with the AA teams, as the Alliance does not have an A only division. This means that if the team plays well enough, it could play with the AA teams after the split. It also means that if both teams do not perform, they could both be in the A division at the end of the season.
What does the new A designation mean for Tryouts?
The new designation means that KMHA A Tryouts will occur in the third week of tryouts. A matrix of Tryout weeks will be posted next week to help families plan with firm dates being announced now that we can plan. Also, new programming details will be announced as we are adjusting regular formats to meet the needs of the new designation, to the best of our ability with further tweaks to come in future years.
What will the A teams receive for a program?
Details will be announced before tryout registration.
Will there still be 2 BB Teams?
No. Currently all programs in Ontario are under an addition moratorium through the OHF. By moving one team we are also able to best utilize available resources.
