After
twenty-two regular season games, the Kitchener Lady Rangers Midget “A’s” opened
up the first round of the Central West Division playoff’s against the Cambridge
Roadrunners, who the ladies had not beaten all season.
Although not scientific, game one had the ladies in a major tournament hangover and seemingly unable to generate much flow. Giving up a goal both while on the “power play” as well as on the “penalty kill”, the ladies were down throughout the game. A nice “low” point shot with an “F2” tip along with some determined corner work with a tip shot on net, gave the ladies their first point of the series.
Coming out strong in game two, the ladies took an early “2 – 0” lead in the first. One of the worst leads in hockey would prove again to be so as the Roadrunners tied things at “two” after the second. Although out shooting and out chancing the Roadrunners in the third, the score remained with both teams earning their second points of the series.
Game three had to have a winner! After five meetings this season all resulting in a tie, something had to give. After a strong first period, the ladies ran head on into penalty trouble in the second, including a prolonged five on three. Capitalizing on an odd man rush, the ladies opened the scoring on a well-placed low blocker side shot. Weathering the second period storm, the ladies remained up “one” heading into the break. Some university French, good third period pressure and two late “empty netters” had the ladies advancing out of round one.
Cheat sheets, scouting reports and executing what you practice all provide you with the opportunity to be successful. BUT, working hard every shift is key. At this point in the season, the ice doesn’t care whether you finished first, fourth or eight. It only cares about who works the hardest and who wants it more. It’s not what you “did in the past” that counts. It’s what you’re doing “now”. You must come to play EVERY game.
Thanks to the Roadrunners for three tough games of hockey. The rivalry and your compete year after year is unwavering. Best of luck in Playdowns.
On behalf of Bill, James, Tim and Sarah, congratulations on advancing to round two.
