Introducing the Summer Shooting Challenge
Submitted By Greg Shaw on Wednesday, June 22, 2016

Attention all AAA Rangers!

It's time to dig the hockey stick out and head into the garage, basement or yard to start your summer shooting program.

Summer Shooting Challenge 2016 Standings

It is the return of the 5000 puck challenge! Beginning Monday June 27 and continuing all the way through the week ending on September 4, you should be shooting a minimum of 500 pucks per week.

This is only a goal, so lets get the competitive juices flowing and try and shoot as many pucks as you can! Uou will be updating your totals online at least once a week, but can do so as often as you want so that you can see how your teammates are doing.

This time around, you can choose how many pucks to shoot in one day and how often you want to do it. So if you want to shoot 500 pucks on Monday and take the rest of the week off, you can! If you want to do 100 a day Mon-Fri, you can do that too!

The players also get to decide on what types of shots they want to take and what location of the net they want to shoot in. We only ask that the players do their best to try and take as close to an even number of each shot throughout the summer and pick different locations regularly to balance out between all four corners and the 5-hole.

The four shots you will focus on this summer are:

  • Wrist Shot
  • Snap Shot
  • Back Hand
  • Slap Shot

The coaches will be doing a road show early on, where we will visit each player's house to work on correct technique and to reinforce the following three elements that we want you to keep in mind while shooting:

  1. Shoot Hard: Every time you take a shot, we want you to try and put a hole in your net!
  2. Shoot to Score: Top corner does not always lead to scoring the most goals. We want kids to visualize a goalie in the net and shooting to different areas where they are more likely to score
  3. Head Up: At no point do we want the players looking at the puck during shooting or stickhandling. We want you to develop a natural ability to stickhandle and shoot with your head up at all times. This will lead to lots of goals and finding those open spots in the net!!

During the instruction, we encourage parents to watch so they can reinforce what we will be teaching. We also ask that the parents do not "put your own spin on it," so we can develop consistency and achieve the best results.

Also, it's a great idea to incorporate stick handling into this challenge. As an example, between every 50 pucks shot you could stick handle for 5-10 minutes (watch YouTube videos of Kane and Crosby and try and do what they do).

Happy Shooting!!!
