One4Another - Godfrey
Submitted By Roy Felder on Monday, November 25, 2019
At the start of the season, our team entered into a partnership with One4Another - 18th Man Project to sponsor a child in Uganda. We have been matched with eight year old Godfrey and he will undergo corrective surgery for his club foot. Our team will be updated with his progress.

Godfrey was born with a left clubfoot and due to a difficult living situation has never received any treatment.  He lives with his mom and four siblings.  His dad left five years ago and didn't come back.  They are a peasant family that survives off of what they can grow in their garden.

The prevalence of kids born with clubfeet is the same in Uganda as it is in Canada (1:1000).  The difference is that our babies are treated as soon as they are born.  They have corrected feet before they begin walking.  Kids in Uganda cannot afford medical services and are left to live with a disability that could have been prevented.

Once the child starts walking on the feet, if not treated, their ankle and foot bones become rigid in their deformity which is why Godfrey requires an operation to be able to correct the foot position.  Clubfoot causes the foot to turn inward and roll over so that the child walks on what is essentially the outside and top of the foot.  This leads to a life of disability and pain when walking.

Treatment for his condition is as follows:

Casts: to stretch the ankle and soft tissues before surgery.  This makes for a more effective surgical reconstruction (3-4 weeks)
Surgery: to reconstruct the ankle joint and lengthen the Achilles tendon
Casts: while the foot heals in the proper position (4-8 weeks)
Braces: which he’ll wear for at least a year to prevent recurrence

We are very excited to have been matched with Godfrey! Welcome to our team!
